Full-Time Service Dog Trainer

Patriot Assistance Dogs is seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join our team as a Service Dog Trainer. We are committed to providing highly trained service dogs to veterans living with PTSD, TBI and other mental health diagnoses, empowering them to live more independent and fulfilling lives. Responsibilities:

  • Train service dogs in a variety of skills, including but not limited to psychiatric support and other individualized tasks as needed.
  • Evaluate potential service dog candidates for temperament and suitability.
  • Develop and implement individualized training plans for each dog, considering the specific needs of the recipient.
  • Work closely with veterans to ensure successful placements and provide ongoing support and training.
  • Maintain accurate records of training progress and client interactions.
  • Collaborate with other trainers and staff members to ensure a cohesive and effective training program.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest service dog training techniques and best practices.
  • Maintain a clean and safe training environment.
  • Schedule and transport service dogs to and from veterinary appointments. 

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in dog training, preferably with a focus on service dogs or related fields (e.g., obedience, behavior modification). 
  • Strong understanding of dog behavior, learning theory, and positive reinforcement training methods.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with veterans, staff, and volunteers.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to help others.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to handle the demands of dog training, including being on your feet for extended periods, lifting, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Desired Training Credentials: Certification in dog training or a related field (e.g., CPDT)
  • Experience with veterans is a plus, but not required. 
  • ADI (Assistance Dogs International) experience/knowledge is a plus, but not required.
